FREE PRE-EVENT SCREENING OF THE CHAMPIONS!
(TV-14) Featuring our special guest speaker, Jamie Beuhrle, and her family, The Champions is an inspirational story about the pit bulls rescued from the brutal fighting ring of former Atlanta Falcon’s star quarterback Michael Vick, and the organizations who risked everything to save them, despite pressure from PETA and The Humane Society to euthanize the dogs. It is a story of second-chances, redemption and hope. This uplifting documentary takes us on a journey about much more than just dogs—about prejudice, being misunderstood, the power of resilience, and the significance of the relationship we as humans have with animals. Featuring the lifesaving work of Best Friends Animal Society.
SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER:
Jamie Buehrle
Pitbull Mom & Advocate

Jamie and Slater
Jamie Buehrle is an animal lover, rescue volunteer, and pittie advocate. While Jamie has always been a lover of animals, it was the Michael Vick situation that really opened her eyes to the discrimination and abuse pitbulls often go through. The more she researched, the more she discovered the horrible discrimination and oftentimes horrific fate these dogs endure.
Little did Jamie know she soon would have her own story to share, and that story would begin sparking conversations nationwide about issues that affect pitbulls. The Buehrle family adopted a sweet AmStaff (American Staffordshire Terrier) named Slater. Shortly after, Jamie and her husband Mark, a professional MLB pitcher, encountered BSL (breed-specific legislation) laws not once, but twice. The first instance occurred when Mark played with the Miami Marlins and the second occurred when Mark played for the Toronto Blue Jays – both cities with breed restrictions. This affected where their family could live, and even kept them from living together during the baseball season. Still, they never considered giving up Slater. He was part of their family. Due to their personal experience, Jamie began to speak out on these discriminatory laws and how they impacted their family in an effort to being awareness and change. Her passion is now to advocate for pitbulls as great family pets, as well as other adoptable dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds in need of homes across the country.
Jamie and her family work closely with Hope Animal Rescues in Godfrey, IL. They purchased 14 acres for the rescue to build its own facility and continue their work in pulling dogs who are out of time and at risk of euthanasia in county shelters. They also sponsor and help with transports for many other local animal rescues in their area. Jamie believes her biggest accomplishment has been her family’s ability to share their story, open the lines of communication, and create awareness regarding BSL and other pitbull-related issues, such as insurance discrimination and a lack of education.
Jamie currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri with Mark, their kids, and dogs…including Slater!
