Fostering with FTTF

Great fosters are essential for any rescue group – luckily, we have the very best! As a foster-based organization, we rely on our foster homes to provide the love and care our dogs need until they find their own forever homes. We know how hard it is for rescue groups of any kind to find committed foster homes and we definitely do not take our fosters for granted. Our foster homes are there for the dogs when they are needed, so we do our best to always be there for our fosters as well.

One of the most common questions we get is “How much does it cost to foster?”. Friends to the Forlorn provides all of the supplies, food, preventatives and medical treatment needed for our dogs. Many foster homes like to buy toys, treats, special collars or other items for their fosters, but it is not expected. We like to make fostering as inexpensive for our foster families as possible. The process for becoming a FTTF foster is similar to our adoption process: there is an application, vet check and home visit. You also must be in Metro Atlanta so your foster dog can attend adoption events and get to appointments at our vet in Dallas and Douglasville.

We must have an approved, committed foster home to be able to take a dog into the Forlorn Family, as we will not take a dog without a safe and stable place to go. We do not believe in taking a dog and placing it in boarding in lieu of having a real foster home and a plan. We also won’t place a dog in just any foster home. Once a foster is approved, we ensure any foster placed in that home is the right fit for that family. We take many factors into consideration, including your other pets, kids, type of home, lifestyle and activity level. We want what is best for you and your foster dog and do what we can to set you both up to succeed!

Why should you foster?

Many of our foster homes are repeat fosters or FTTF adopters who have chosen to become fosters. There are many benefits to fostering, just ask them and they will tell you!  But, overwhelmingly the most important reason there is to foster a dog is you will be saving a life. And trust us – your foster dog knows you saved him or her! Without fosters, we can not do what we do. Everyone loves a Freedom Ride, and our fosters make the Freedom Rides possible!

If you are not able to physically foster a dog but would like to help, we also have a Virtual Fostering program. You can help provide food and other supplies for a FTTF Adopt-a-Bull of your choice and get information and photos of your “foster dog” in return. In some cases you can even meet and spend time with your virtual foster dog. Learn more about sponsoring a dog on our Virtual Fostering page!
